It’s never too early to make a Will but it could be too late! Avoid family arguments, unnecessary costs and delays.
The only way to be sure that your family and loved ones are looked after is to make a Will, keep it up to date and make sure it is found by the right people when the time comes.
• Don't assume 'my other half will get everything' your spouse or partner is not entitled to everything. The unfair rules of Intestacy will share your assets between your family and even the state, YOU have no say. Unmarried couples only get single Inheritance Tax Relief and may not inherit anything.
• The Courts will decide on the future of your children if no parent remains, or could if the parents are unmarried. A valid Will nominating guardians is invaluable in such cases.
• The Local Council (through care fees) or your spouse’s new partner or children may eventually inherit everything, leaving your children and grandchildren little or nothing.
• It will take longer to finalise your estate without a Will. During this time your beneficiaries may not be able to draw any money from your estate.
• It can lead to arguments and distress for relatives.
